American Noise: Vol. 2 is the anticipated second limited edition vinyl\u00a0release soundtrack companion to The Smart Studios Story, a\u00a0groundbreaking documentary about the history of Madison, Wisconsin\u2019s\u00a0Smart Studios and its role in recording and supporting DIY\/independent\u00a0music in the Midwest. The critically acclaimed film chronicles 30\u00a0years of Midwest rock history and links early indie bands to the\u00a0larger story of American rock history.<\/p>\n

While American Noise: Vol 1 (available at\u00a0www.thesmartstudiosstory.com<\/a>) shared the earliest Butch Vig recordings\u00a0of local, unsigned bands, Vol 2 includes artists who traveled from\u00a0other scenes in the US to record at the fledgling studio between\u00a01987 and 1993.<\/p>\n

This era coincides with the growing reputation of producers Butch Vig\u00a0and Steve Marker – two self-taught, DIY studio owners whose skills\u00a0took the raw sound of local bands and created polished, powerful\u00a0analog recordings. Through touring bands, college radio, and The Sub\u00a0Pop Singles Club, their early work, most notably with KILLDOZER and\u00a0DIE KREUZEN, caught the attention of credible indie labels like Sub\u00a0Pop, Touch and Go, and Alternative Tentacles.<\/p>\n

Following the release of Nirvana\u2019s pivotal, Nevermind, both Butch and\u00a0the studio received an explosion of attention. More and more artists\u00a0sought to record with Butch and many of them wanted to do it in the\u00a0crumbling, two-story red brick building on East Washington Avenue.<\/p>\n

All of the tracks on American Noise Vol. 2 come out of this period.\u00a0\u00a0Sonically, it spans the broad spectrum of Smart’s clientele at the\u00a0time. Pop, acoustic, beat and the heaviest of heavy, chuck full of\u00a0dirt, growl and thump the way Smart was always able to deliver.<\/p>\n
