Steve Adamyk Band – Graceland LP/Bad Sports – Living With Secrets 12″

Bad Sports Living With Secrets Art 3x3Graceland Art 3x3

Taking orders for these now, ships on Friday, 8/26

STEVE ADAMYK BAND – GRACELAND LP: Blame Canada. Or for that matter, Ottawa. The Capital’s kings of punk- power-fuzz are back and better than ever. After a whack of records and worldwide touring, “Graceland” is Adamyk’s most dynamic and cohesive record to date, without breaking the mould. Colleen Green (Hardly Art) sings on it, Mike Krol  (Merge) croons on it and members of Sonic Avenues are now staples in the band.

This time, the band bunkered down in Montreal with engineer Adrian Popivich (Solids, The Dears) to bring Graceland to life. In the meantime, scream along to “Through My Fingers”, or get lost in the depths of “High Mile”; the choice is yours.

Mr. Adamyk has been nothing but prolific since coming aboard the Dirtnap roster, this is already his fifth LP, with a sixth is in the planning stage.  We here at Dirtnap find that his trademark brand of speedy, caffeinated, catchy-but-not-too-wimpy pop perfectly exemplifies that aesthetic that the label strives for. We’ll keep putting these out as long as he keeps makin’ ‘em.

First 300 are on clear vinyl, and are available mailorder ONLY! Black vinyl also available. All copies come with 320kps download coupon.

Bad Sports – Living With Secrets 12”: Bad Sports return with a jaw-dropping new 12”!

While the band hasn’t released anything in a couple of years, the individual members have been anything but idle during that time. Orville Neely continues his slow takeover of the world with rock juggernauts OBN III’s (who have released 2 albums in the past 2 years) while Daniel Fried and Gregory Rutherford’s band Video got signed to Jack White’s label Third Man Records, and has been touring ever since. The pair have also been touring a ton as 1/2  of Radioactivity, who of course released the stunning Silent Kill LP on Dirtnap last year.

Originally conceived as a series of 3 singles, the band and label at one point realized that the individual 7 songs that were recorded worked very well as a piece, and decided to release them all together on a 12” ep.

Living With Secrets represents another definite step forward for Bad Sports. Moving away from both the ebullient punk/power pop of 2011’s Kings Of The Weekend, and the anything-goes grimy punk of 2014’s Bras, this 12” shows the band at their darkest, most powerful, and occasionally weirdest. The tone is dark, the lyrics are bleak and desperate, but the music is more dangerously catchy than ever. We always say this, but this truly is their strongest material yet.

Disconnector is the fourth studio album (3rd for Dirtnap) by Montreal-based band Sonic Avenues, to be released on October 7th 2016. The 12 songs featured on the album were recorded in the winter of 2016 by Adrian Popovich and Sonic Ave’s vocalist/guitarist Maxime Desharnais at Mountain City and Sound Salvation Studios (the latter being Desharnais’ home).

Disconnector sees the band drawing its drive, dynamics and lyrical content from the desire of getting as far away possible from a formula of creative comfort. The approach resulted in an array of songs featuring the band playing with new instrumentation, different tempos and a variety of song structures. Sonic Avenues’ conscious effort to offer abrupt contrasts along with new textures has them further developing their own dynamics, turning dark and quiet into fast, noisy, fuzzed out sing-alongs.

Musically, a lot of the inspiration around the songwriting revolved around bands like Adrian Borland’s The Sound, Gary Numan, DEVO and A Flock Of Seagulls just to name a few.

Lyrically, Disconnector continues to build on the thoughtful vibe largely established on their last LP (2014’s well received Mistakes). Their new work, which favors an approach of select contexts subjugated by phonetic writing, explores themes of future and destiny, human potential and its annihilation, self-control, abandon, etc.

In terms of sheer energy, the band’s punk roots are still in evidence. Given the subsequent development in lyrical and musical maturity, though, if you didn’t know what to listen for, this could almost be a different band from the one that released their s/t debut LP back in 2009.

Never ones to make the same record twice, Sonic Avenues has always been a band that’s measurably grown and progressed with each successive LP, but we think you’ll agree that Disconnector marks their biggest, boldest step forward yet.
