Martha “Love Keeps Kicking”

Love Keeps Kicking

County Durham indie-punk heroes Martha have announced details of their brand new album Love Keeps Kicking, out April 5th via Dirtnap Records (N. America) and Big Scary Monsters (elsewhere). The third full-length from the much loved quartet, Love Keeps Kicking is a celebration in the face of heartache, told through 11 career best anthems.

Having introduced fans to their new music with the riotous ‘Heart Is Healing’ late last year, today Martha have shared the album’s incredible title track ‘Love Keeps Kicking’, along with a tongue-in-cheek video homage to 50s alien invasion movies. Watch now on YouTube.

Of the video, directors Ben Epstein and David Combs said: “We wanted to do an old sci-fi alien invasion pastiche and create a threat that no one can outrun, because as the song implies, at some point or another, we all feel the harsh sting of heartbreak. And what better metaphor is there for the inevitability of a broken heart than the swift kick of a giant disembodied foot? It basically wrote itself.”

In many ways Love Keeps Kicking is a breakup record, with each song inhabiting different parts of the process. In true Martha style, the album dissects emotions and moments with poignancy and the wry lyrical wit present throughout their back-catalogue. A pop band at heart, the record sees the band writing with reinvigorated focus, producing some of their biggest choruses and the greatest sing-along moments yet.

Martha will celebrate the release of Love Keeps Kicking with an extensive European tour, kicking of at Madrid’s Popfest on 22nd March. The tour will see the band play some of their biggest headline shows today, including a date at The Garage, London on 16th April. Tickets for for all shows are available from marthapunx.com. American Noise: Vol. 2 is the anticipated second limited edition vinyl release soundtrack companion to The Smart Studios Story, a groundbreaking documentary about the history of Madison, Wisconsin’s Smart Studios and its role in recording and supporting DIY/independent music in the Midwest. The critically acclaimed film chronicles 30 years of Midwest rock history and links early indie bands to the larger story of American rock history.

While American Noise: Vol 1 (available at www.thesmartstudiosstory.com) shared the earliest Butch Vig recordings of local, unsigned bands, Vol 2 includes artists who traveled from other scenes in the US to record at the fledgling studio between 1987 and 1993.

This era coincides with the growing reputation of producers Butch Vig and Steve Marker – two self-taught, DIY studio owners whose skills took the raw sound of local bands and created polished, powerful analog recordings. Through touring bands, college radio, and The Sub Pop Singles Club, their early work, most notably with KILLDOZER and DIE KREUZEN, caught the attention of credible indie labels like Sub Pop, Touch and Go, and Alternative Tentacles.

Following the release of Nirvana’s pivotal, Nevermind, both Butch and the studio received an explosion of attention. More and more artists sought to record with Butch and many of them wanted to do it in the crumbling, two-story red brick building on East Washington Avenue.

All of the tracks on American Noise Vol. 2 come out of this period.  Sonically, it spans the broad spectrum of Smart’s clientele at the time. Pop, acoustic, beat and the heaviest of heavy, chuck full of dirt, growl and thump the way Smart was always able to deliver.

One time only pressing of 500 on black vinyl. Sorry, no download coupon on this one.
